Where'd the money go?

Description:

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly"s Standing Committee on Poverty Alleviation and Social Security on Friday grilled the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) over complaints that money donated for flood victims was yet to be distributed to the people it was meant for.

Committee members sounded the alarm that a large number of people in Balochistan and Sindh are complaining that they have not received payments.

"What kind of gift is it if the victim herself does not know about the money that was distributed to her?" the panel chairman asked.

He said the victims in Sanghar were yet to receive the much-needed money, sharing that he had accommodated some of them himself in his house.

"How can I believe that BISP reached out to flood victims in boats and helped them?" he asked further as the committee members demanded that the flood affected areas be re-surveyed.

However, BISP authorities present at the meeting claimed that they could not be sure whether all the victims had been paid and told the committee members that BISP had received only Rs 70 billion from the government against their demand of Rs 103 billion.

"A total of Rs 70 billion was donated to flood victims by the finance division, which was split," they said.

The authority has been informed that more than 270,000 people have been given the money, of which more than 25,00,000 have already collected the money, officials said.

Authorities are making payments to flood victims based on their CNICs and as far as people whose CNICs have expired, they have also been receiving payments.
