Pakistan desires stronger ties with the United States as a new envoy begins his tenure in Islamabad

Description:

Donald Blome meets with Prime Minister Shehbaz shortly after offering his diplomatic credentials to President Alvi.

Soon after submitting his diplomatic credentials to President Arif Alvi, the new US envoy to Pakistan formally began his diplomatic mission in Islamabad with a session with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Donald Blome came in the federal capital on May 23, but he had to wait until July 1 to deliver his diplomatic accreditation to President Alvi in order to begin his duty legally. Before presenting his credentials, he met with Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and visited Karachi.

Blome is the first full-time envoy to Pakistan since 2018, as former President Donald Trump, despite his friendship with then-Prime Minister Imran Khan, never assigned a full-time ambassador to Islamabad.

The new envoy takes over at a key point in the cooperation between Islamabad and Washington, considering their competing interests.

Concerns have been expressed in Pakistan that, following the United States" withdrawal from Afghanistan last year and its close relationships with India, Washington may not pursue a long-term engagement with Islamabad.

What complicated matters further was Imran Khan"s claim that he was deposed as part of a US-planned coup because he wish to continue an independent foreign policy.

In light of this, the conversation between the prime minister and the US envoy was regarded as significant.

According to an official PM Office handout, Premier Shehbaz congratulated the envoy on his presentation of accreditation and expressed hope that the latter will concentrate his efforts to extending and strengthening bilateral ties between the US and Pakistan.

In this regard, the prime minister emphasised the two countries" historic, long-standing relationships, as well as Pakistan"s determination to further deepen this relationship based on mutual respect, trust, and interest.

"Recalling the breadth and depth of the Pakistan-US relationship, Prime Minister Shehbaz emphasised that various dialogues established between Pakistan and the US have played a critical role in enhancing our bilateral ties in the areas of trade, investment, information technology, climate change, health, and energy," according to the statement.

The premier emphasised that, given Pakistan"s economic and demographic potential, the US Development Finance Corporation should encourage US enterprises to participate in Pakistan"s enormous market. The premier also emphasised the need of holding the Investment and Trade Framework Agreement Ministerial meeting later this year, as well as the Business Opportunities Conferences this year.

"This year marks the 75th anniversary of Pakistan and the United States establishing diplomatic relations." The prime hoped that both countries would commemorate this historic occasion appropriately, deepening bilateral and people-to-people ties. He also emphasised the importance of increased high-level contacts between the two countries," according to the release.

Ambassador Blome expressed gratitude to Pakistan for its fast and efficient support in assisting the withdrawal from Afghanistan. In this context, the prime minister emphasised that greater cooperation between Islamabad and Washington may promote peace and stability in Afghanistan and help to avert the country"s humanitarian catastrophe, which had been exacerbated by the recent earthquake.

The Prime Minister has highlighted the rising tide of Islamophobia in India.

While stressing the rising tide of Islamophobia in India, the prime minister criticised the two BJP officials" sacrilegious remarks on the venerated figure of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) that had gravely harmed Muslim sentiments.

PM Shehbaz further emphasised that India was conducting significant human rights violations in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). While emphasising Pakistan"s commitment to regional peace, he emphasised the significance of a peaceful resolution to the Jammu and Kashmir problem. In this context, he urged the international community to fulfil its moral and normative commitments, while also urging India to follow UN resolutions.

The prime minister also expressed his heartfelt greetings to the people and administration of the United States on the occasion of their 246th year of independence.

Ambassador Blome expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Shehbaz for welcoming him and emphasised the US commitment to further expand and consolidate Pakistan-US ties.
