Govt to hold joint sitting of parliament on Tuesday

ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to convene a joint meeting of both the houses of parliament on Tuesday (October 11) instead of October 20 to discuss the bills related to election laws.

The laws were returned by President Arif Alvi after the National Assembly and Senate passed them separately three months ago. The joint session has technically been going on since early June this year and is adjourned almost every month by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Raja Pervez Ashraf, in exercise of the powers vested in him under Rule 4 of the Parliament (Joint Session) Rules, 1973.

President Arif Alvi returned the bill to parliament without offering his assent when it was duly passed by both chambers separately. In the event the bill is passed in a joint session of Parliament, they would become part of the books without being referred to the President.

According to agenda items, Federal Minister Murtaza Javed Abbasi will present the Elections amendment Bill, 2022, as passed by the National Assembly and the Senate and returned by the President. at once according to Article 75 paragraph 2 of the Constitution. (Changes entered into a separate list to be moved). The Minister will proceed to amend the Electoral Act of 2017 (Electoral (Amendment) Act of 2022).

Syed Amin-ul-Haque, Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunications, would suggest that the National Information Technology Establishment Bill, which has been passed by the National Assembly and has not been passed by the Senate within ninety days, be immediately taken into consideration under clause (3) of Art. 70 of the Constitution.

Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain will introduce the Pak University of Engineering and Emerging Technology University Bill, 2022 as passed by the National Assembly and failed to pass the Senate within ninety days to be passed. considered immediately according to Article 70, paragraph 3 of the Constitution.
