Description:
On Sunday, the Punjab Assembly approved a motion calling for the resignations of Sikander Sultan Raja, the chief election commissioner (CEC), and other "biassed" members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
The change occurred the day after the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) made the decision to submit a "judicial reference" against the CEC and other ECP members for allegedly breaking the code of conduct by meeting with the government delegations earlier this week.
On July 29, a delegation made up of representatives from the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), PPP, and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan met with ECP officials and pleaded with them to swiftly announce the long-delayed decision in the PTI"s prohibited funding case and take appropriate legal action against it.
Speaker Sabatin Khan stated that PTI-PML-Q joint candidate Wasiq Qayyum Abbasi has been elected PA"s deputy speaker without a challenge as the province assembly session got underway, according to Express News.
The newly elected deputy speaker was then sworn in by the speaker.
After thereafter, a resolution put forth by PTI MP Syed Ali Abbas calling for the resignation of the "biassed" CEC and ECP officials was approved by a large margin.
The motion from the province assembly sought the resignations of the ECP members, including the CEC, on the basis of "solid proof" in order to allow the electoral watchdog to conduct fair elections.
The resolution further denounced the "foreign conspiracy" that led to the PTI-led government in the Centre being overthrown.
It said that the only way to save the nation from its deteriorating political and economic challenges is to hold early and transparent general elections.
A bill giving the assembly secretary the authority of the Punjab Assembly was also adopted by the parliament. The powers belonged to the legal secretary under the previous PML-N administration.
The Punjab Assembly sessions was afterwards called to recess until August 15.
