PMD Establishes Monsoon Emergency Helpline No. 16

Description:

During the current monsoon season, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has established helpline 16 for monsoon emergencies and has applied section 144 near rivers and dams.

Dr. Zaheer Ahmad Baber, Director of the PMD, told a private news channel, "All authorities worried are advised to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures during the forecast period," and added, "The caller would only have to dial 16 and this will be routed to the flood emergency response department concerned."

"All authorities involved are encouraged to remain careful and take precautionary measures throughout the projected period,"said Dr. Zaheer Ahmad Baber, Director of the PMD, adding, "The caller would simply have to phone 16 and this will be directed to the flood emergency service department responsible."

He also warned tourists and travellers to be cautious throughout the anticipated period.

Dr. Zaheer stated that a thorough action plan for flood prevention in Nullah Lai and other Rawalpindi drains had been devised.

Previously, the Pakistan Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) directed concerned departments to make people more aware about urban flooding and how to avoid it.

The areas that are expected to experience rain-windstorms and thunderstorms as a result of the current monsoon system include Islamabad, Swat, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Mardan, Swabi, Kohistan, Haripur, Peshawar, Nowshera, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Rawalpindi, Murree, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Sargodha, Hafizabad, Narowal.
