Top Gun: Maverick, an all-American blockbuster from Paramount and Skydance, surpassed the coveted $1 billion milestone over the weekend, according to Variety. Maverick, which has maintained its strong box office performance, is only the second movie in recent memory—behind Sony"s Spider-Man: No Way Home—to surpass the billion dollar mark. What else? Without appearing in China or Russia, two significant international marketplaces, it succeeded.
Maverick has also become Tom Cruise"s first film to cross $1 billion at the global box office after barely a month on the big screen. Prior to this, Mission: Impossible - Fallout from 2018 held the record for the actor"s most lucrative movie, earning $791.1 million globally. Therefore, to commemorate reaching his first box office billion, Cruise posted on Twitter, saying, "Congratulations to all the films currently in theatres, to all the studios, and to all the exhibitors. We appreciate you coming out and letting us entertain you, audience. I"ll see you at the theatre.
Brian Robbins, president and CEO of Paramount Pictures, stated earlier in the day that the studio has been "absolutely blown away" by the response to Top Gun: Maverick. In a statement, Robbins said, "We have been utterly blown away by the global response to "Top Gun: Maverick." It"s uncommon to get the specific kind of chemistry that creates a true event film. "We are grateful to the inimitable Tom Cruise, our brilliant cast and directors, as well as our outstanding distribution and marketing teams, for creating a flawless film and theatre experience for viewers all over the world."
With $521 million at the box office prior to this weekend, the follow-up to the 1986 action film Top Gun had already surpassed all previous records. Maverick already has $30.5 million in its sixth weekend of release, and it is closely vying with Elvis, a newcomer, for the top spot on the American box office charts. Maverick"s worldwide box office earnings have reached an astounding $1.006 billion after an additional $484.7 million was earned abroad. Its box office success allowed it to rapidly exceed Disney"s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, a Marvel adventure that took in $943 million and held the record for the highest-grossing film of the year worldwide.
The box office hit of the long-delayed movie was far from certain, even though Maverick also drew larger crowds because to its target audience being both children and adults and because of the sentimental value carried by its predecessor. But since its Memorial Day weekend release, Top Gun: Maverick has broken box office records thanks to both critical and commercial acclaim. The movie made $160.5 million over the course of the prolonged holiday, making it the only movie in Cruise"s 40-year career to break $100 million in a single weekend.
Repeat customers and Imax theatres, according to Paramount, have fueled momentum in the weeks after Maverick"s debut on the big screen. In North American movie theatres, by the fourth weekend, 16% of the audience had seen the film twice, and 4% had seen it three times or more.
The $170 million budgeted Top Gun: Maverick, directed by Joseph Kosinski, centres on Cruise"s Pete "Maverick" Mitchell as he prepares a fresh squad of pilots for a crucial mission. Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly, and Val Kilmer, who played the Iceman in the first Top Gun movie, are among the cast members.
This accomplishment is a result of five years of cooperation with our outstanding cast and crew, which also includes members of the US Navy, added Kosinski. There is no substitute for seeing a movie in a crowded theatre, as seen by the enthusiasm of fans worldwide. When I was 12 years old, I sat in awe as I watched Top Gun, a movie that for me personified the theatre experience. The greatest accomplishment of all is to play a role in something that is defining moviegoing for a new generation of fans.
This success is the outcome of five years of collaboration with our superb cast and crew, which also comprises US Navy personnel, said Kosinski. The passion of moviegoers throughout the world is proof that there is no replacement for watching a film in a crowded theatre. When I was 12 years old, I watched Top Gun, a movie that, to me, embodied the theatre experience, and I sat in wonder the entire time. Playing a part in something that is defining movie goers for a new generation of fans is the greatest achievement of all.
