Arshad Nadeem Wins the CWG22 Historic Javelin Gold

Description:

Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan made history when he broke the 90-meter barrier in the men"s javelin throw event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Birmingham, becoming the first athlete from South Asia to do so.

The Commonwealth Games javelin thrower made history by being the first Pakistani to win a gold medal in athletics in 60 years.

The 25-year-old began the first round with a throw of 86.81 metres, which was a personal best. He broke his personal record with an 88-meter third throw after his first two attempts were ruled illegal.

A throw of 85.09 metres was recorded by the Olympian on his fourth effort, but there was still much farther to go. With a throw of 90.18 metres on his fifth attempt, Nadeem made history by becoming the first athlete from South Asia to break the 90-meter mark.

In his sixth attempt, the young man from Mian Channu, who had already won the gold after his fifth throw, threw at 81.29 metres.

The 87.58-meter throw of India"s Neeraj Chopra, which won him gold at the Tokyo Olympics, was much inferior to Nadeem"s 90.18-meter performance.

Anderson Peters of Grenada (88.64 metres) won silver, and Julius Yego of Kenya (85.70 metres) won bronze.

Pakistan won a gold medal for the second time at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Weightlifter Nooh Dastagir Butt had earlier taken home the gold in the men"s +109kg final.

In the men"s 120-yard hurdles event at the 1962 Commonwealth Games in Perth, Olympian Ghulam Raziq brought Pakistan its final athletics gold medal.
